If any of you ever get a chance to see a bout, you'll notice that there are a lot of staff, up to 7 referees and a dozen-odd non-skating officials. For our referees to do a good job, they need these "NSO"s to communicate penalties and scores with between jams. Referees cannot practice this without you!

Rough job outlines that we need immediately are:

1 jam timer - whistle signals start & end of full jam, timing 2 minutes per jam, 30 seconds between jams.

2 score trackers - One for each team, to confirm points scored for each jammer on each scoring pass with jammer refs.

3 penalty timers - One for each team and one for the jammers, times 1 minute in the penalty box for penalised skaters.

2 penalty trackers - One for each team, must have ears open at all times! Refs will report all minor & major penalties to you between jams but it helps if you listen out for your own teams penalties during a jam too.

When we have more refs and the equipment we will also need:

1-2 "3-board" operator(s) - tracking players with 3 minor penalties so refs know to send them off for their next minor.

2 outside whiteboard operators - communicating penalties with outside refs during jams and with penalty trackers between jams.

For fresh meat/Sunday skaters, this is an excellent opportunity to see more of the sport in action as we usually don't scrimmage on a Sunday night. If you would like to come along to Wednesday training and see how you can be involved, you can skate the warm-up and endurance for no charge.

I have a refing question. Can any ref issue a penalty to any skater? ie can one jammer ref issue a penalty to the other jammer or another player if the first ref does not see it?

Hi Wonton, as I've already told you I'm not going to be able to skate for a while as I'm having an op, so if my recovery goes well I'd love to help out whilst i'm off my wheels! Probably about two weeks time if that's any good? :) x
