That link doesn't work any more, so here's the YouTube one:
Another social sounds great! How can we get hold of the film? It's not on Amazon, is it out yet?
(I'm going to Portland in April and I wanted to go and see the Derby league there, it's the Rose city girls of Brutal beauty!!! ...I knew Portland had a good team but now I'm even more star struck)
Yes, they were. It was still the same spirit lingering from the 70's if I'm not mistaken.
Nowadays, Derby girls are practising a real sport which is spectacular enough as it is, rather putting on a show, wrestling-style. I wouldn't do Roller Derby if it was staged.
I found the whole jelly fight to raise funds for BGGW at the end reeeeaaaally depressing... I like the fact that that bit is free of comments and edited in the exact right place. It speaks volumes.
thanks, del, for the hell on wheels link. i'd never managed to find a complete version online, and all the torrents i found were for some 1970's film called "hell on wheels". ...and i didn't wanna pay $25 + shipping for the dvd. so thanks a bunch!! : )
wow, really interesting to know how it all kicked off! it cleared up a lot of things in my mind. i'd still like to know when the rules started to switch over to a more serious sport rather than all the fighting and whatnot. i felt that the original girls who started BGGW were living in a cloud or something, and were total bitches. bless their hearts, it must have been a tough thing to see your vision become the vision of other women too. seems a shame it had to split off, given that they all ended up retiring in the next year. but out of it came texas rollergirls, and the lonestar rollergirls...and well, the rest is history.
thought it was really lucky that they were filming a documentary in such a crucial point of the development of modern roller derby. it was sweet to hear them talk about how the sport had grown across the country, knowing of course that since then it's gone around the world. i hadn't realised that some of my favourite skaters in the tx rollergirls had been skating since the beginning...
all in all very inspiring to watch, those texas girls are rough-n-tough i am desperate to play in texas one of these days! ...but not while they scare the shit out of me. ; )
