Hey,

As its been said previously, were now getting to the point where we need to make sure we are all wearing full safety gear (esp intermediate sesh and snake players!) and whilst most of us have got pads, i think most of us still need to get gum shields.

This has come up in conversation a lot recently and although i know you can get them pretty cheap, unfortunately that means they usually dont fit and arnt very good.

Also buying them on the internet can be a pain as taking the mould is difficult and may go wrong in which case you have to send it back and start again!

I have spoken to my dentist and you can get a proper gum shield on the NHS for a reasonable price and they take the mould for you so it will fit and be suitable for its needs. They can also offer you advice if any questions.

I am with Coronation Road Dental Surgery in Southville and they have quoted me;

£45.60 for a plain one

£50 if you want bright colours and patterns! (of course!)

I assume that will be the same for all NHS surgeries?

It only takes 10 mins to take the mould and the gum shield will be ready to collect in 1 week so pretty quick.

Ive signed up for mine as although i dont mind bruises or even broken bones, i personally wouldnt appreciate my teeth smashed in and the dentist bill after! :0

Hope this of use?!

Goldie xxxx

Yeah I got a custom one too though I'm on Denplan and so got it for £20. Its still worth paying more though if you can afford it as lets me honest its going to be hard to be a hot derby girl with missing front teeth! Plus mine fits like a dream :-p xxx

I use one for my kickboxing competitions, mine was super cheep like £2.50. Its one of those that you put in boiling hot water for a few seconds then place it in your mouth, and bite on it until it moulds to your teeth.

They can be brought in most sport shops and are very good, ive taken a few blows to the face and my teeth are sre still going strong!!!!!

;0)

ooh I think I would get Vampire to go with my underworld back story! (I've already written my bio - sad, I know!)

I'm goofy so all the shop bought ones are really hard to fit. Going to visit the dentist I think...

I like the ones in the designer section where you can have your number on the gumshield :)

Is anyone considering the other type of gumshields that protect both top and bottom teeth at the same time? x

I got one similar to what SIM1 has described, from that massive cheap sports shop (Sports Soccer??) in town - FYI they are behind the counter on the second floor - I tell you this because I asked the shop assistant if they had any gumshields and she stared at me blankly, said 'err, no I don't think so' despite the fact she was standing right in front of them!! lol

It was about £5 and I found it easy to do the whole boiling/moulding thing!

Hope that helps x

She might have been confused because Gum Shields is the brand, I think? Try asking for mouth guards!

Oh I see! I did also explain it was to protect teeth while skating (as she stared blankly) so I thought I'd been clear enough...

;-P

No, I find the shop assistants at Sports World a complete joke. Staring blankly must be stated in their contract.
